Here’s some video of two prototypes for puzzles I’ve made in UDK. These will eventually be in Down, hopefully looking much prettier than these. Again, prototype, that’s the key word here. It’s how they function that matters more than how they look.

First is the dance floor puzzle, where you have to remember the order that the squares light up in and then step on them in the correct order to get to the other side. This was made entirely within UDK using Kismet. The same basic Kismet could be used for just about anything where the player needs to complete objectives in a specific order.

Next we have the suitcase puzzle, or object collection if you prefer. The player has to go around the level collecting various items, each of which will take up a certain amount of space in his suitcase. Then the player will have to arrange these items so that they all fit. Sounds simple right? Well, most people who have tried it so far haven’t found it too easy, so perhaps there will have to be some sort of puzzle hints in the final game, where it will let the player try for a certain amount of time before allowing them to get a hint.

The puzzle itself was made in Flash, UDK just handles actually collecting the items.

So controls then. Pretty simple, it’s E to grab the items, I to bring the suitcase up on screen, Q to rotate and the mouse to move stuff around. Items are spawned in the puzzle with a random rotation, and while I’ve only found one way to get all the pieces into the suitcase, the game allows the player to do it differently, if he can.

This could easily be adapted into an inventory system for pretty much any game, although you would likely want to store the values in Unreal rather than Flash so that you could unload the SWF when you don’t need it. I dunno. Either way would probably work.

So yeah, that’s all for now. Feel free to leave me some comments or ask me any questions directly.

Here’s a few shots of the parking garage I’ve been working on for Level Design. These are just viewport captures from the UDK editor. It’s still pretty barren but the basic layout is there. There will be an elevator and stairs taking up the dark area to the left of the ramp in picture 4, and there will be a sprinkler pump room somewhere too, which will also provide access to the sewers in the final level. There will also be vehicles at some point in the future, but I have no idea when I’ll have time for that.

Anyways, enjoy!
